I don't live in LA, but it is a federal program through the Social Security Office. You'll need to put in a call to the local Social Security office. They will send you forms to fill out and usually will do a phone interview. You'll need to be able to give them your work history, including dates and duties you were required to do. If it's for medical reasons, they will want your medical records and they will also use their ';experts'; to diagnose you with something different. Then, when you get turned down, either keep trying to get it on your own, or hire an attorney. The whole process takes 18-24 months and you get a retroactive check that begins 6 months after you became ';disabled';. IF you get approved. If you don't get approved even with a lawyer, you're not going to be able to get it.
I had to hire a lawyer the moment I got my first turn-down by Social Security, since my problem is anxiety. I was having panic attacks daily; and, if I even thought about work -- even someone else working -- I'd freak out. So, I have a claim that is a mental illness. My guess is it is harder to prove a mental defect than a physical one.
If a lawyer won't take your case, then you can't win. The lawyer will only get paid if you get disability income, so why would they take on a case they won't get paid for? The lawyer takes a percentage of your very first, retro-active check.
You'll be eligible for Medicare two years after your disability date.
